What happens during your Blood Pressure check appointment?

Arrive at the pharmacy

When you arrive at the pharmacy let the pharmacy team know you have arrived.

Take a seat in the treatment room

At the time of your appointment you will be invited into the treatment room where the consultation will be completed.

Get your blood pressure taken

After putting the cuff on your arm the Pharmacist will ask you a few questions and take your details before taking three blood pressure readings.

Discuss your results

Once the measurements have been taken the pharmacist will discuss your results with you as well talking through some ways in which you can control your blood pressure.

Further monitoring (If required)

If your blood pressure is high the Pharmacist will discuss further monitoring options with you. If your blood pressure isn’t dangerously high, this will typically be ambulatory blood pressure monitoring which is a portable monitoring device that measures your blood pressure for 24 hours.

What is high blood pressure (hypertension)?

High blood pressure, formally known as Hypertension, is a serious condition where you heart is made to consistently work harder to pump blood around your body.

The condition does not usually have symptoms and affects 30% of adults in the UK, so regularly getting your blood pressure checked is the best way to identify it.

If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart problems, stroke, and health problems.

How long will my appointment take?

Your appointment will take around 10 minutes.


What happens if my blood pressure results are high?

If your blood pressure results aren’t dangerously high you will be offered an ambulatory blood pressure monitor so that your blood pressure can be continuously monitored over a 24-hour period.

This is done using a small blood pressure monitor that you wear on your arm and around your waist.

Once you return the monitor to us we will process the data and send it to your GP who will be in contact to arrange an appointment.

If your blood pressure is very high, you will be referred to straight to your GP or in extreme cases to A&E.


How much does a BP check cost?

If you meet the NHS eligible criteria it’s free.


Who is eligible for free NHS blood pressure checks?

Patients eligible for this service:

  • If you are aged 40 years or older and you do not currently have a diagnosis of hypertension
  • If you are under 40 and have a recognised family history of hypertension.*
  • If you have been referred by your GP for a blood pressure measurement.

* This is at the healthcare professional’s discretion.


Who is at risk of high blood pressure?

Some people are more at risk of developing high blood pressure than others.

There are however, a number of factors that can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, some of which are:

  • Being overweight
  • Smoking
  • Eating too much salt and not eating enough fruit and vegetables
  • Not exercising
  • Aged 65 or over
  • Drinking too much alcohol or coffee (or other caffeine-based drinks)
  • Being of black African or black Caribbean descent
  • Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep
  • Having a relative with high blood pressure
  • Living in a deprived area

If you are at risk of high blood pressure, It’s even more important to regularly check your blood pressure to closely monitor your health.


What is Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)?

ABPM is a method of automatically measuring your blood pressure on continuous basis over a 24-hour period.

The small device is fitted by the pharmacist in the pharmacy and requires you to wear a cuff on your arm, like a normal blood pressure check, and a small box on a belt around your waist.

After wearing the monitor for 24-hours you will need to return it to the pharmacy where the results will be processed and shared with your GP.
