Starting a new medicine for a long-term condition can sometimes leave us full of questions. The new medicine service gives you the chance to speak to your pharmacist so you can get the most out of your new medicine.

Collect your new medication
If your new medication makes you eligible, the pharmacy team ask you if you want to sign up as well as confirming your contact details.
Start your new medication
Start your new medication in line with your doctors recommendations.
Your first consultation with the Pharmacist
7-10 days after collecting your medication we will give you a minute call to see how you’re getting on with your new medication and answer any questions you may have.
Your second consultation with the Pharmacist
14 days after your first call, we will give you another call to see how you are getting on with your new medication.
Don’t get left in the dark
When starting a new medicine people can often have problems and in some cases, it can be difficult to get help.
This service allows you to get support and advice from a pharmacist over the first several weeks of your new medication so that you can get the best out of your new medication and know how to use it safely.

The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a FREE service we provide on behalf of the NHS.
If you’re prescribed a new medication to treat certain long-term conditions, you can get free help and advice about your new medication from your pharmacist.
If the medication you take makes you eligible it’s free.
The service is available for people who have been prescribed a new medication for the
conditions below:
- Asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Osteoporosis
- Gout
- Glaucoma
- Epilepsy
- Parkinson’s disease
- Urinary incontinence or retention
- Heart failure
- Coronary heart disease
- Atrial fibrillation
- Unstable angina or heart attack
- Stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
- Long-term risk of blood clots or blocked blood vessels, including DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
No, we have private consultation rooms in all of our pharmacies where you can talk to the pharmacist or healthcare professional without being overheard.
No, there is nothing for you to prepare or think about before the call.
The conversation will be pretty free flowing, but will be based on the questions below:
- Have you started your new medication yet?
- How are you finding your new medication?
- Do you have any problems or worries about your new medication?
- Would you like to ask me anything about your medication or anything else?
We will be calling you from our head office phone number, 01332 348 545.
If you have given us a mobile number we’ll send you a text in the morning to remind you that we’ll be calling.
If you miss a call from us don’t worry about it.
We’ll leave you a message to let you know we’ve called and will try again later or the following day.
Each call will last between 5 – 15 minutes.
