Got a question about our pharmacy service?

Your appointment will take around 10 minutes.

If your blood pressure results aren’t dangerously high you will be offered an ambulatory blood pressure monitor so that your blood pressure can be continuously monitored over a 24-hour period.

This is done using a small blood pressure monitor that you wear on your arm and around your waist.

Once you return the monitor to us we will process the data and send it to your GP who will be in contact to arrange an appointment.

If your blood pressure is very high, you will be referred to straight to your GP or in extreme cases to A&E.

If you meet the NHS eligible criteria it’s free.

Patients eligible for this service:

  • If you are aged 40 years or older and you do not currently have a diagnosis of hypertension
  • If you are under 40 and have a recognised family history of hypertension.*
  • If you have been referred by your GP for a blood pressure measurement.

* This is at the healthcare professional’s discretion.

Some people are more at risk of developing high blood pressure than others.

There are however, a number of factors that can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, some of which are:

  • Being overweight
  • Smoking
  • Eating too much salt and not eating enough fruit and vegetables
  • Not exercising
  • Aged 65 or over
  • Drinking too much alcohol or coffee (or other caffeine-based drinks)
  • Being of black African or black Caribbean descent
  • Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep
  • Having a relative with high blood pressure
  • Living in a deprived area

If you are at risk of high blood pressure, It’s even more important to regularly check your blood pressure to closely monitor your health.

ABPM is a method of automatically measuring your blood pressure on continuous basis over a 24-hour period.

The small device is fitted by the pharmacist in the pharmacy and requires you to wear a cuff on your arm, like a normal blood pressure check, and a small box on a belt around your waist.

After wearing the monitor for 24-hours you will need to return it to the pharmacy where the results will be processed and shared with your GP.
