Who is Eligible for the Pharmacy Contraception Service?

Yes

For the Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC): Anyone aged 16 to 49 years of age,
For the Progestogen Only Pill (POP): Anyone aged16 to 54 years of age.

Anyone under 16 years of age.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you can come straight to us if you are aged 16 or over and are looking for a new supply of the oral contraception you are already taking or you want to start taking oral contraception.

Do I need to be registered with a GP to access the service?

No, you don’t need to be registered with a GP to start a new oral contraception or to get a new supply of oral contraception.

What will be asked during the consultation with the Pharmacist?

If you have had an GP appointment for your oral contraception in the past, the consultation with the pharmacist will be very similar.

If you’ve never had oral contraception before, your pharmacist needs to make sure oral contraception is right for you and will likely ask about the following:

Your general health and any current medical conditions,
Previous experiences with oral contraceptives or other forms of birth control,
Any history of medical conditions that might contraindicate the use of oral contraceptives,
Lifestyle factors that might affect the choice or efficacy of contraception,
Preferences regarding contraception options.

Similar to an appointment at the doctors, the pharmacist may also check your blood pressure and weight.

Do I need to make an appointment for a consultation?

You don’t need to make an appointment for a consultation but we advise that you do so that you don’t have to wait for the Pharmacist to become free.
