How do period delay (Norethisterone) tablets work?

Periods are triggered every month by a drop in the levels of the hormone progesterone.

Period delay medication, Norethisterone, is a synthetic version of progesterone and works by keeping your hormone level high, delaying your period for up to 17 days.


How long does the consultation take?

It usually takes 5-10 minutes to complete the consultation.

Are there any side effects from period delay tablets?

Norethisterone for period delay can cause side effects such as:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Changes in mood

You should not use this treatment method if you have a history of blood clots


Is period delay safe?

Norethisterone can be suitable for occasional use, but should not be taken regularly.

We will review your suitability after from your online consultation answers, so it’s important thatyou complete it honestly.


Will period delay tablets stop me from getting pregnant?

No. Norethisterone does not act as a contraception when taken for period delay

It is important to consider if you need alternative contraception, such as condoms.

Norethisterone should not be used if you are already taking the combined pill. In this case, you could take two packs of combined contraceptive pills back to back to skip a period, this will var ydepending on the type of combined pill you use.


Who shouldn’t take period delay tablets?

Norethisterone isn’t suitable for everyone and our clinical team wont be able to prescribe them for you if you have been diagnosed with any of the following conditions or are taking any of the following medications:

Conditions

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding of unknown cause
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy, migraine, asthma, kidney or heart problems
  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • High blood pressure
  • Angina
  • Any liver disease or disturbance of liver function
  • Jaundice or herpes during pregnancy
  • Severe itching
  • Porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder)
  • Dubin-johnson syndrome (chronic jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)) or rotor syndrome (jaundice in childhood)
  • An inherited disorder of the red blood pigment haemoglobin (porphyria)
  • Cancer of the breast or genital tract
  • Any serious medical condition which may require immediate hospitalisation

Medication

  • Medicines to treat epilepsy (e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
  • Antibiotic medicines to treat an infection (e.g. tetracyclines, rifampicin, co-trimoxazole)
  • Antiviral medicines to treat HIV (e.g. ritonavir, nelfinavir)
  • Anticancer medicines
  • Herbal preparations containing St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
  • Aminoglutethimide, sometimes used in Cushing’s syndrome
  • Ciclosporin (for suppressing the immune system)
  • Non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for treating pain and inflammation
  • Medicines for high blood pressure
  • Rifamycin
  • Warfarin
  • Sex hormones
  • A statin for high cholesterol
  • Griseofulvin

Can I take norethisterone if I’m taking hormonal contraceptives?

No, if you are already taking hormonal contraceptives you should not take norethisterone.

You are already taking the combined pill, you could take two packs back to back to skip a period, but it is important you understand how to do this appropriately.

If you are unsure, you should discuss this with a pharmacist, GP or contraception service as the method varies for different pill types.
