Why is it important to get vaccinated before travelling?

If you’re planning on travelling outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off on your adventure. Getting your vaccines before departing can help prevent you from getting some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world. At Wilsons we provide travel vaccines and advice to help keep you and your family healthy and safe as well a full range of antimalarials.

How long before I travel do I need vaccinations?

Most vaccines take time to become effective and may require more than one dose over period of time for you to get full protection. You should ideally visit one of our travel clinics at least 6-8 weeks before you are due to depart. This will give your body enough time to build up an immunity.

However, if you have an emergency trip come up, we can give you a last minute appointment to prepare you as best as possible.

What vaccines do I need to travel?

Ensuring you have the right vaccines for your travel destination is crucial for a safe and healthy trip. The vaccines you need can vary based on factors such as:

  • Where you are travelling to,
  • How long you are travelling for,
  • What activities you have planned,*
  • Your vaccine history.**

* The likelihood of you coming into contact with certain diseases may depends on the activities you have planned on your trip. If you are planning on trekking through a jungle you will be at a higher risk of exposure to some diseases than you would be if you were staying in a resort for the duration of your trip.

** Some vaccines give you protection for life. If you’ve already received a vaccination for certain diseases you wont need another.

How do travel vaccines work?

Travel vaccines are designed to protect you from infectious diseases that may be prevalent in the areas you plan to visit. Similar to the flu vaccine, these vaccines work by stimulating your immune system to recognise and fight specific pathogens.

As with all vaccines, some vaccines may not be suitable for everyone. Always consult with a GP or pharmacist to determine the specific vaccines recommended for your destination and travel plans.

Our pharmacy team is here to provide guidance and help you stay healthy during your travels.

What do I need for a travel advice appointment?

For your travel vaccination appointment, you’ll need:

  • Details about your trip
    • Destinations
    • Dates
    • Planned activities – so we can evaluate the risk of you coming into contact with any disease
  • Details of any medication you’re taking and any medical conditions
  • History of previous vaccinations – you can get this from your GP

What if don’t know my vaccination history?

Having your vaccine history allows us to check if you are already fully protected against any diseases or if you only need a booster to re-gain full protection.

If you don’t have a copy of your vaccine history, it’s not a problem, we just have to give our recommendations on the assumption you’ve had no vaccines in the past.

You are then free to choose which vaccines you want to receive.

The risks from having additional doses of vaccine you’ve had in the past are small, the main reason we review your history is to make sure your not paying for vaccines you don’t need.
